Super Bowl 59 Super Yachts

What Yachts Are In NOLA For The Big Game?

Today is Super Bowl LIX (59), and I’ll be damned if I don’t pen a blog combining my two favorite things in life, the NFL and the business of boating. When the Eagles & Chiefs kickoff tonight, some of the world’s most known superyachts—owned by NFL team owners—will be moored nearby. That’s no small feat. As the north edge of the newly anointed Gulf of America, New Orleans is one of the harder waterfront NFL cities for super yachts to access. If you choose a downtown mooring like Shahid Khan’s m/y Kismet, your voyage concludes with a 100 mile upstream navigation through the Mississippi River; not the simplest movement but well worth it for a 10 minute drive to the Caesar’s Superdome.

How to track superyacht locations

It sounds intrusive, but much like private jet tracking, the location of super yachts is public information. Data like ship position, speed, direction, hailing port and more, are relayed live through a ship’s “AIS” (Automatic Identification System). This feature – the most popular global location system – also allows vessels to track each other on a map.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the United States Coast Guard, and in compliance with the SOLAS provision, recreational yachts must use AIS if they are 300+ GT on an international voyage, or if they are 150+ GT carrying more than 12 passengers on an international voyage.

I looked at the AIS yesterday (Automatic Identification Systems) to see who’s in New Orleans for the big game, and I’m a little disappointed.

AIS has different access plans. For full access to the database, you can pay to subscribe, or add your own vessel to the database and then have full access. The public has access through 3rd party sites like MarineTraffic.com.

I thought we’d have a who’s who of the yachting community this weekend. But after a quick look, I think the accessibility of New Orleans took a toll.

The Super Bowl Pick

As a NY Giants fan, times have been tough for me. I wish it was possible for the game to end in a tie. I would prefer the Chiefs not three-peat with the help of the refs, and the Eagles don’t win another game until their team goes bankrupt and are forced to relocate to Germany. Due to these events being impossible, I have to pick the Chiefs on account of hating the Eagles with every bone in my body.

Chiefs 34 – Eagles 32
